A few months ago I was offered a 6-week free trial of K5 Learning’s online reading and math program. The offer came to me in the midst of the winter that would never end and at the height of my fears that my daughter would never ever return to school again for a proper education and we’d have to shelter in place and figure out this homeschooling thing for reals.
Ahh fear. Ahh long winter. Ahhh so glad that’s over (it really is over, right?).
Fear aside, I’m glad I jumped on that offer and spent some time with K5. K5 Learning is an online reading and math program for kids from kindergarten through grade 5. They aim to help kids build reading, math and study skills through independent study. Which is sort of perfect for the way we parent and the our educational values. We didn’t choose Montessori for our daughter by mistake. The independent and child-led methods fit with our ideals and philosophies like perfectly interlocking puzzle pieces. And so did K5.
We’ve got a repertoire of computer or ipad-based learning programs that we shuffle between and K5 found a happy home there. Nothing like granting a screen time request and fulfilling a little parental ulterior motive at the same time. My girl loves to answer questions and the format of K5 was familiar yet also challenging.
In the end, we felt that K5 was a bit too advanced for our 4 year old at the moment. She is quite comfortable with the touch-screen-based iPad but still new to the navigational troubles of a mouse. But I’m marking this down as a tool to revisit in a few months when the summer gets long and I worry about all of the amazing progress she’s made this year fading into those beautiful summer sunsets.
Worried about the summer slide too? Sign up for a free trial of K5 and schedule a bit of time in your long summer days for some independent learning.
