This morning, as I sat on the floor, eating my breakfast, Baby came and stood beside me. She is at just the right height now so that when I sit on the floor, and she stands next to me, we are eye-to-eye. She was babbling about reading a book (“read it the book” she says) and I was looking over the growing collection of books that she was putting on my lap. Then, for a brief moment, she paused. I turned my head towards her, her face an inch or two from mine. She smiled a purely happy, beautiful smile and said “Hi Mommy.” In the moment, I could not have stopped myself from smiling if I had tried with all my might. The memory of her face and that smile stayed with me all day.
